As South Africa enters a new age in its democratic history, Good Governance Africa, a research and advocacy organisation has identified 10 key areas which the Government of National Unity (GNU) should prioritise.

Each of these 10 areas falls within 3 broad categories of challenges which the GNU must confront to unleash South Africa’s full developmental potential. These categories are:

  • Addressing citizen dissatisfaction with democracy by rebuilding confidence in South Africa’s political system.
  • Building a capable state that can provide citizens with accessible and high-quality services while unlocking South Africa’s economic potential.
  • Positioning South Africa as a responsible regional and global actor during a time of regional instability and global volatility.

Below, we explore these issues, emphasising the core problems the GNU will need to address, and GGA’s recommendations to the GNU.
